The Core French curriculum endorses, what is commonly referred to as, the communicative experiential approach. In this approach, the focus of instruction is the purposeful use of the language to perform real-life tasks, share ideas, acquire information, and get things done. Grammar instruction plays a supportive role – to provide useful strategies to facilitate communication and comprehension. In this, course students develop the skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking and interacting.  They also learn about the important role grammar and culture play in gaining a deeper understanding of language.

This introductory language course is intended for students who no previous knowledge of Mandarin.

The course will explore communication, acquiring information, experiencing creative works, and understanding cultural influences. It will introduce students to basic Mandarin knowledge and skills such as the phonetic systems, Chinese characters, commonly used vocabulary, and sentence structures and expressions.

The activities and exercises cover oral/writing expression/comprehension, including use of Hanyu Pinyin. Assessments will include written assignments, oral presentations, quizzes, and projects.

Introductory Spanish 11 is a course specifically designed for students that have no previous knowledge of Spanish. The basic tools used in this class are a book, audio files, many video clips and written exercises. Many aspects of Spanish speaking cultures and its contribution to our society are covered in this class. Main topics covered are; greetings, present tense, basic descriptive words, question words, basic possessive words and common communicative phrases related to tourism.

This language course is intended for students who have a prerequisite of Mandarin 9 or equivalent.

It will also build upon previously acquired knowledge and skills such as the phonetic systems, Chinese characters, commonly used vocabulary, and sentence structures and expressions.

This class is a continuation of Introduction to Spanish 11. It deepens the knowledge of the Spanish language and culture through the use of video clips, dialogues, written exercises and the use of built in text book pages.

Assignments are submitted through online activities. Main topics covered are; present and past tense, likes and dislikes, orders, prepositions of location, directions and common communicative phrases related to daily activities. There is a required culture project. There is no midterm or final exam.
