Salmonids in the Classroom

October 31, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 11:00 am

It is that time! We are happy to announce we have partnered once again with a WL McLeod class to bring the Salmonids in the Classroom project.

If you have any local students who would like to join us for the arrival of our two-eyed Pink salmon eggs, please share the information below and let me know by Oct 30th of who will be in attendance.

When: Thursday, Oct 31st 10:30-11am @WL McLeod. We will meet at EBUS before heading over.

Chinook salmon returns are low due to the Boston Bar slide and the fact that natural runs are not returning in full strength. This is the primary reason we will be raising Pink salmon this year.

Some Interesting Pink Salmon Facts:
Pink salmon are the smallest of the Pacific salmon types. Their life cycle is also the shortest- two years. Since they are smaller, they tend to travel in schools for protection.

They do not spend an extended time in freshwater. They immediately begin their journey to the ocean.

What this means for our tank: Our Pinks will need to be released once they ‘button up’. Chinook are different- we continue to raise them in the tank after button up and feed them till June release. This could mean a late April/ early May release for the Pinks.

Please ask your online teacher for the participation link.
