English 11 integrates reading, writing, mechanics, listening, and oral response in each unit. Readings include a variety of writing styles and genres. Writing is focused on personal response while adhering to specific rules of a variety of writing styles. One novel is studied (students choose one novel to read from a list of five). Essays are incorporated into each unit based on previous work in the course. Macbeth is the Shakespearean play studied using a variety of materials to enhance understanding and to make the reading of the play easier. A few oral readings/recordings are required to meet the oral response component of the learning outcomes.
