How Does Inclusive Education @EBUS work?

To be eligible for Inclusive Education designation (with additional funding support) through the BC Ministry of Education, learners must meet specific criteria for one of the following categories:

  • Physically dependent
  • Deaf/blind
  • Moderate to profound intellectual disabilities
  • Physical disability or chronic health impairments
  • Visual impairments
  • Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Behavioural Needs or mental illness

While learners included in the following designations may be supported by Special Education personnel, additional funding support is not available at EBUS Academy:

  • Mild intellectual disability
  • Gifted
  • Learning disability

Step 1: Contact us to Discuss Enrollment

Collect copies of inclusive education documentation:

  • medical and/or psychological reports – including the original report establishing the learner’s diagnosis
  • reports/assessments provided by other health care/educational support workers – e.g., speech-language, occupational therapy, mental health
  • previous IEPs and report cards

Contact Barb Ziler, our administrator in charge of Special Education, who will explain the program and talk with you about the needs of your child.

If it is determined that we are able to offer a program that will meet the needs of your child, we will ask you to submit the aforementioned documentation to the Special Education team. Our team will then submit a designation request to our District Principal.

Please note: a designation in one school district does not automatically guarantee designation in any other BC school district.

Step 2: Developing an Individualized Education Plan

Once designation is approved, families work with an EBUS Special Education case manager to identify and develop annual goals specific to areas of need. These goals are recorded in the learner’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Funding and Budgets

Based on identified needs and goals, a budget is developed and community specialists (service providers)* are engaged to round out the learner’s team.

*Please note:

To qualify for remuneration, service providers cannot be members of the learner’s family.

Each service provider must supply EBUS with a current criminal record check.

EBUS Academy must directly pay for all services and resources. We are unable to reimburse parents if they choose to pay directly.
