June 16 fulltime grade 10-12 newsletter

Hi everyone, the end of the school year is nearly here!  Lots to celebrate with our full-time families for the past year, thank you for choosing EBUS.  This is the final newsletter for this school year.  For students returning next year, we will have a newsletter going out the week of August 29th for the start of the new school year.

SUMMER SESSION 2023

There are a few courses left for summer 2023!  Info found at https://ebus.ca/online-learning-programs/summer-program/!  Full time or cross enrolled students can take 1-2 courses with teacher supports in the summer, with the firm expectation to finish by the end of August.  My strong recommendation is to take 1 course and successfully complete it, as the majority of students who take 2 summer session courses struggle to complete either course.  On July 4 they will have full teacher supports.  As teachers return to their regular school year job in early September, it is essential students finish their course by the end of August.  It is strongly recommended students only take 1 course to ensure successful completion, but students planning for 2 courses need to contact their academic advisor indicating parent support and a detailed plan of their summer activities and plan to complete both courses by the end of August.  Note that due to ministry policy, courses started between September and May 1 cannot be moved to summer session.

ACCESSING CURRENT COURSES OVER THE SUMMER BREAK

At about this time in the school year families begin to look at time remaining before summer holidays, the amount of work to be completed before then, and ask what happens after June 16.

We encourage all students to finish their course work by the June 16 deadlines for a variety of reasons, but if necessary, students can continue into the fall with no penalty.

In the meantime keep working hard, now and until the end of June but be aware:

  • June 16 is the guarantee date
    • All work finished by this date will be reflected on student’s EBUS report card and available for ‘home’ schools to see via provincial student information system by end of June.
  • From June 29-Sept 5 EBUS is closed for summer break,
    • meaning there is no one answering emails/phone calls, marking, setting up tests, or providing teacher supports for regular school year courses.
    • ‘Regular school year’ computer servers will be down for annual maintenance.  This means students who start courses from September until now in the school year, will not have course access for a period of time in the summer.
    • This will not affect our annual Summer Session as that will be run on a separate server.

Please note that transferring from “school year’ or current courses to ‘summer session courses’ is not an option.  Please connect with your academic advisor if you have any questions or concerns.

COURSE SELECTIONS FOR THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR

Great to see so many students putting in their course selections for next fall.  I will be going through them by June 30 approving ones received.  For those still needing to submit their requests find all the details at https://ebus.ca/fulltime-student-course-selections-for-sept-2023/

For students considering leaving EBUS for the next school year, I recommend you contact the new school you are considering so you can take care of course selections very soon.  If you plan to leave EBUS at the end of June, please be sure to send you advisor a heads up so we can transfer your file.  If you are staying with EBUS, all you need to do is course selections ASAP and email those directly to me.

WHAT ABOUT?

As our final installation of the What About? the question for our graduating students is how do I actually graduate?

Once you have finished all of your courses and the required graduation assessments, it will take up to 10 school days to get your marks sent to the Ministry of Education to add to your transcript.  It is the student’s responsibility to check their transcripts regularly on the student secure website to ensure there are no mistakes or errors.  Instructions on how to check your transcript are in the homeroom and all high school students should do this regularly.

Once eligible to graduate in June, the Ministry will produce your transcript and diploma and mail them to EBUS and we will mail them to you.  You can imagine at this time in the school year it is extremely busy there, so expect your official Transcript and Diploma to be mailed to you by mid-October.  You will be graduated well before then, but the record will take some time to arrive in your hands.

If you are going to college or university, as soon as your courses show up on your transcript they are available to your chosen schools for your application.  More details can be found here as well https://ebus.ca/marks-and-transcripts-faq/

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE

Over the years we have collected a number of free online resources to help with mental health.  I encourage you to email me if you have a great free resource not listed here!

PARENT ACCESS

Parents, you can access your student’s progress and report cards on the EBUS parent portal: https://my.ebus.ca/parentportal/login.php  We recommend parents log in with their student at least once a week to stay actively engaged in their learning and progress.  Students, you can access your report cards from your dashboard, look for the A+ icon in the upper right-hand corner.  Report cards are published 5 times a year; November, January, March, June and for summer session courses only, September.

PHONE APPOINTMENTS

Currently I am working from home.  To book a phone appt with me, use https://tinyurl.com/yyrbnz7p and select the appropriate amount of time you need when you are available for my call.  My calls will show up as SD91 for School District 91.  EBUS Academy as also set up Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone calls so I now have a phone number you can reach me at!  I am available at 1-250-567-4413 ext 7409.   Booking a phone appt is the easiest was to ensure you will reach me, but I will answer calls during the workday when available.

As I have number of year end projects that must be finished by June 30th when I leave for summer holidays, I recommend booking your appt no later than June 28th to ensure I will be available.

To you all, thank you for choosing EBUS as your high school.  To our graduating students, we are very proud of all you have accomplished and wish you every success in the days ahead.  Drop us a note to fill us in on your adventures, we always love to hear from our grads.  To those leaving EBUS, we wish you well in the next steps and appreciate you choosing EBUS for the time you were with us.  And for those returning to continue your educational journey, we look forward to working with you again in the new school year.

Have a wonderful summer everyone!
